Will a bitch in heat and a new puppy get on?
kasha asked:
We are getting a new puppy very soon. We already have an 18 months old Bullmastiff bitch. She is in heat now. Does anyone know if the heat could cause a behavior problem for the two dogs to get on?

It really depends on your dog. I’ve had b1tches who really didn’t change at all when they were in heat, while others are more of a prima dona and get a little “b1tchy”. You’ll just have to keep an eye on your bullmastiff and see how she reacts, especially while she’s in standing heat.

Why don’t you get them both fixed so you don’t have to worry about it?

It definitely requires caution on your part. A female in season can be quite cranky, and a new puppy jumping all over her and constantly trying to play may try the patience of even the friendliest female. Also, females tend to not tolerate as much from puppies that are not theirs. A breeding female may kill puppies that are not hers. That doesn’t mean that these two will not become best friends and get along famously. But caution is called for and you should be reading your female constantly during early interactions.

I love the personality of a bullmastiff. They are so sweet.
